DIY - Do It Yourself Tips

You can purchase unfinished letters, shapes and boards and paint your own. Our MDF components have a very smooth surface that can be painted with virtually any type of paint. These materials are great for kids craft parties as well as homemade gifts.

Supplies

  • Mdf board, letters, & shapes. Purchase from us of course!
  • sandpaper (optional) The letters are smooth and ready to paint, if you want to soften the edges a little or remove some of the fine hairs you can sand with fine paper (220 grit) or maroon scotch brite pads work well.
  • Paint brushes – Foam brushes and/or Artist's brushes. We recommend more than one brush or thoroughly dry your brush before reusing as the water in the brush can thin your paint and it will take more coats to cover.
  • Paint – DecoArt® and Delta Creamcoat® acrylic paint brands cover well and can be found at most craft stores and dollar stores. If you have wall paint left over from the room you can use that as well. We have used several types of lacquer, enamel, acrylic and oil paints and they all work well. One customer reported that he primed the letters and painted them with automotive paint.
  • Craft Twinkles (optional)- DecoArt® Craft Twinkles crystal glitter (DCT1) is a multi-colour glitter. DecoArt® Craft Twinkles Silver Sparkles (DCT2) is a fine silver sparkle. These Twinkles come in a 2 oz bottle and can be brushed on to any colour.
  • White wood glue – Weldbond® glue dries strong and clear, but any brand of white will work. Other glues may work as well, just be careful of the glue squeezing out when you press the letter down because the extra glue may be hard to clean up.
  • Clear coat lacquer - a spray or brush-on application. We use a clear coat satin lacquer spray to give our signs a nice shine and to help seal the paint, but this step is optional. The acrylic paints from the dollar store are flat and scuff and mark easily. We use a clear satin lacquer to give a bit of shine to protect the paint and make it easier to clean.
  • 8 or #10 pan head wood screws to hang your sign up or heavy duty double face tape with a foam spacer.

Painting Tips

You Can Paint It!

  1. Pick your Letters shapes and boards. Stacked symbols can add impact, especially if they are different colours. For example, a 2″ pink flower placed over a 3″ purple flower looks great on a white board. Refer to our customization guide for ideas on style, size and placement.
  2. Individually paint the letters and shapes before you glue them together. Cover the edges but don't paint the backsides of letters and shapes you are later going to glue onto the board. When the first coat of paint is completely dry. Artist's brushes work well for getting into the edges of the letters and shapes. Acrylic paint dries quickly, usually within 30 minutes. You will need 2 or 3 coats depending on the colours you have chosen.
  3. It is time to paint your board. We paint the entire board. Paint the backside first, let it dry and then paint the front and edges. A foam brush works well to get an even finish on the broad areas.
  4. use fine-grain sandpaper to remove paint bubbles that may have dripped on the backs of the letters and shapes. This will help ensure that they lay flat and adhere well to the board.
  5. If you want to add twinkles to any of the components its easier to do it before you glue them together. After the paint has dried you can add glitter or sparkle to the letters and shapes or board using glitter as a brush-on application. Avoid heavy coats or going back over wet twinkles. If you want more, wait until the twinkles dry and then brush more on.
  6. Set the painted letters and shapes to the side to completely dry.
  7. Place the the letters and shapes without glue so you can play around with the arrangement of your letters and symbols on the board to see what you like best. Straight lines create a clean, classic look, while curves and waves add movement and playfulness.
  8. Pick up each letter individually and apply glue sparingly to the back of the letter or shape. Excess glue will squeeze out the sides when the piece is placed on the board. If there is squeeze out wait a minute or two and then you can clean it up with a toothpick. Be careful not to smear the glue. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and ensure the glue is completely dry.
  9. We recommend using a clear satin lacquer top coat. Place your glued sign over newspaper with some coins under it to keep the edges off of the paper. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions spray the lacquer in smooth even strokes over the entire length of the sign. Apply an even wet coat and let it dry.
  10. You've done it... Now sign your work!!!
  11. Decide how you will hang Your Masterpiece.
    1. Option #1:The boards and all 8″ and 12″ letters have pre-drilled keyholes in the back so you can easily hang your finished sign on a wall or door. If you have glued larger letter on a board you only have to hang the board portion, not the large letter as well. Measure the distance between the center of the keyhole slots on the back. Make small marks on the door or wall the same distance apart. You may want to use a level to ensure your sign will hang straight. Securely fasten screws in the wall so the head of the screw sticks out of the wall approximately 1/8″.Simply place the round part of the keyhole over the head of the screws and slide the sign down. If the sign does not sit flush to the wall, remove the sign, turn the screw in a little further, and replace the sign.
    2. Option #2 It you do not want to put screws or nails in your walls or doors you can use double sided tape. A word of caution, the Velcro hangers do not hold well. We recommend using double sided tape with a foam layer between the tapes. Follow the manufactures recommendations for weight and suitability. When attaching signs to a door, consider that the door may "close rapidly" and this will greatly increase the "weight" of the sign that the tape needs to hold.

Congratulations!!! Your masterpiece is complete!!! We would love to see your finished creation PAINTED BY YOU!!-Send us an email to sales@looseletters.ca and with your permission we will add it to our gallery of customer artistry. Your creation in our gallery will inspire others. Take a look for yourself at the gallery and see what others have done. Please note: By sending your photos to us you acknowledge they will be available online for anyone to view, copy, and use.

IDEAS

In this guide we hope to inspire you some of the layouts that we have made. Of course, with Loose Letters you are not limited to these options.

Letters are offered in two different fonts and with two heights in each font. Boards are offered in various heights and lengths. Shapes, numbers, and punctuation are available.

If you can glue it, you can do it!

Letters

Funky Font Letters are available in 2-inch and 3-inch sizes. Cute and playful – each one seems to have its own personality!

The 2" and 3" letters are flush at the back so the can easily be glued to your next project, or hung with double sided tape.

Formal Font Letters are available in 8-inch and 12-inch sizes for a more sophisticated style.

The 8" and 12" letters can be hung directly on the wall for a bold statement. Each of these letters has keyholes drilled in the back so the letters are ready to hang flush on the wall or door.

Boards

We carry boards in 48 different sizes so you can arrange your letters and shapes in multiple ways! All boards have 3 keyholes in the back so they can be hung easily and stay secure against a wall or door.

Select the board that best fits the letters and shapes arranged the way you want them. Boards are available in 4 heights:

  • 3.5 inches tall -- fits 1 row of 2" letters, length from 3.5 to 25.5 inches
  • 5.5 inches tall -- fits 1 row of 3″ letters, or 2 rows of 2″ or 1 row of 2" in a wave, length from 5.5 to 38.5 inches
  • 9.5 inches tall -- fits 1 row of 8" letters or 2 rows of 3" letters or 4 rows of 2" letters, length from 5.5 to 38.5 inches
  • 13.5 inches tall -- fits 1 row of 12" letters or 1 row of 8" and 1 row of 2" or 3 rows of 3" letters, length from 5.5 to 38.5 inches

Shapes, Numbers, Accents, and Special Characters

Add some fun to your project. Try stacking a small star on a large star for a special effect – you can do the same with flowers and hearts!

The shapes offered in 2" and 3" are Hearts, Flowers, Stars, Treble Clefts, Music Notes, Horseshoes, Dogs and Paw Prints as well as most of the punctuation marks ie # & + , . ^ - etc.

Also available are 8 inch and 12" ampersand (&) symbols as wall as 12" horseshoes.

However depending on colours and style, it can also look good on the board only, on the First letter only or just on the shapes. You are the designer, you get to choose.

Crystal Glitter

multi-colour sparkle that reflects pastel tones. Can be muted on light pastel colours.

Silver Sparkles

fine Silver points show up well on dark colours and cool colours.

About

Proudly Made in Canada

LooseLetters.ca has manufactured our products in Exeter, Ontario, Canada since 2006. You will not find Loose Letters anywhere else! Looseletters began in 2005 when Michael made the first sign for his niece for her birthday. It was a hit !!!MVR (talk)he had scored points as an uncle !!!MVR (talk)thinking this was a good idea he started making letters for other people.

Michael then made a display of ready to finish letters and boardsMVR (talk) customers occasionally picked up a display and the loose letters would fall to the floorMVR (talk)Thus the name "LOOSELETTERS" became the name of the business.

Building

This is where each and every Loose Letter is made and where all your signs are created! Our production shop is built on land that was home to a livery way back when. Story goes, the livery sold horses to the Queen of England! The building dates back to the 1950’s and was originally the Jone-McNaughton Grass Seed Mill. The building has since been partitioned into office space, production space, and residential apartments. The original wood floors and beams remain throughout.

The design of our letters and boards are the creation of Michael Van Raay.

Michael responds to emails and assists customers with online sales. You can reach him at Sales@LooseLetters.ca.

Yes, the Team Includes a Robot!

Robbie the Robot paints all the individual pieces for your custom-made signs. Robbie picks up trays of letters and boards from a rack and then loads the paint gun with the correct paint colour. His robot arm moves the tray back and forth under the paint gun before placing the tray back on the rack and moving on to the next one. He’s pretty cool.

Oh! The Places We’ll Go…

Kid, You’ll Move Mountains! Be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea, you’re off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So… get on your way!

~from Dr Suess, Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

Our signs are displayed in interesting places and used in novel ways. Here is a list of just some of the examples we know of…

On the rafters of Grandma’s rustic cabin (with two more names are on the way!) To announce the entrance to “Hunter’s Hens” (5-year-old Hunter’s chicken coop) To identify school classrooms and hallways As wedding guest books (MR & MRS letters) At wedding candy tables For baby shower gifts On bedroom doors (and lots of other doors, for that matter) Above cribs Under Christmas trees As room decor (Live, Love, Laugh… Peace, Love, Joy… Family & Friends…) Over pet beds and food bowls Be sure to send us a picture of where your LooseLetters.ca signs are displayed!

How Many Ways to Spell a Name?

For example – here are 42 variations of “Megan”

Maeg Maegan Maegin Magan Magin Maigan Maigan Maigen Maiginne Maygen Mayghan Maygin Meagaen Meagan Meaghaen Meaghan Meagin Meagon Meayghan Megaen Megan Megann Meganne Megarn Megern Meggah Meggan Meggin Meggon Meghaen Meghan Meghann Megin Megyn Mehgan Mehgern Meigan Meygan Meygan Meyghan Mhegan Mihgen You can check out http://www.babynamewizard.com/baby-name/girl/meghan for more information about the origin and meaning.

LooseLetters.ca is where I finally found my unusual name spelled the “right” way!

Can You Find Your Name?

We have found the coolest site for unusual name research. http://nameberry.com/lists/category/unusual-names We’ve been in the name sign business long enough to see hundreds of unusual names and unique spellings of more common names. But we are still surprised at every show! If you’re looking for a name that is sure to shock Grandma, these lists include unusual names drawn from history, nature, books, and more. The best part is that LooseLetters.ca carries every name you see here! If it’s spelled with letters and accents, we’ve got it covered.

RTF (ready to finish) pricing is: 2" RTF letters are $1.75 each 3" RTF letters are $2.50 each 8" RTF letters are $6.00 each 12" RTF letters are $9.00 each Single line RTF boards range from $2.00 to $9.00 each depending on the length.

Painting for stock signs or custom orders is $18.00 per name. Adding Crystal or Silver Glitter to a name is $2.00 per name.

On the left side of the layout there is a list of the costs for ready-to-finish pieces (Unfinished price) and for the painted and assembled sign. Shipping is shown as a separate item and taxes are extra. All prices are in Canadian dollars.

Pickup

When your order is ready for pickup. Our hours are Friday from 10 am to 5 pm and Saturday 10 am to 1 pm. If these times do not work for you, please contact me to arrange an afternoon or evening that works for you. I live and work in the same building, so unless I am away most days work. Please arrange a time before you make the trip to confirm that I will be here.

How Big

In the layout the numbers you see above the images are the approximate lengths and height of the sign. (in inches). A box of that size is shown in a white outline. We offer letters in four sizes (2", 3", 8", 12") and we carry boards in many different heights and lengths. We are happy to show you more examples in any size combination you'd like to fit the space where the sign will be displayed.

How big do your letters need to be to be seen and read clearly. A few years ago I met a fellow who had been a sign painter all his life. He told me the optical resolution on the human eye is 1/10th of a degree. With this formula we can calulate the maximum distance you will be able to read a letter.

  • 1" letters +/- 45 ft (15 paces)
  • 2" letters +/- 95 ft (32 paces)
  • 3" letters +/- 140 ft (47 paces)
  • 6" letters +/- 275 ft (92 paces)
  • 8" letters +/- 375 ft (125 paces)
  • 12" letters +/- 550 ft (183 paces)
  • 24" letters +/- 1150 ft (383 paces)
  • 48" letters +/- 2250 ft (750 paces)

You can measure the distance by simply counting your steps (paces) as you walk away from your sign location. Each pace is equal to +/-3ft.

This is just a guide and not a hard rule. Other factors such as the font and the colours of the letters and the background can decrease the visibility/readability.

How can I pay

When the layout is finalized, I will email a summary of your order and the instructions to pay by E-transfer. If you prefer to pay by credit card I can send you an online PayPal invoice which you can pay securely online using Visa, MasterCard, or PayPal. You do not require a PayPal account to pay the PayPal invoice with a credit card. Please let me know if you intend on paying with credit card or PayPal. Please do not send credit card details by email as my email is not secure.

How Long does it Take

Your order will be shipped within 4 weeks. You will receive email notification from Canada Post with a tracking number when the parcel has been received by Canada Post. Standard delivery is 2-3 day from when Canada Post receives the package.
